After the screening of “Inside fur”, Eurogroup for Animals’ member Dyrenes Beskyttelse participated in the debate with the Danish MEP Jeppe Kofod, Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament.

“It is a very important film documenting the suffering of the animals in fur farming. Fox farming is banned in Denmark and it is difficult to understand that mink farming is allowed to continue. In contrast to other farm animals, mink are solitary territorial predators unfit to live in cage systems” says Brigitte Iversen Damm, Dyrenes Beskyttelse.

Denmark is the biggest producer of mink furs in Europe, with more than 17 million minks killed each year for fur.

“The conditions that we see in this film are horrible and totally unacceptable. We must have more controls on the farms and ensure that the existing rules are respected. Further on, we must fight for a stricter legislation to be put in place. For example, the animals should be separated so that cannibalism cannot take place – this was the most shocking detail of the film, and I must say that I was not aware of that before. It is important that we work together in the EU on this” says Jeppe Kofod, Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament.

“Inside fur” has previously been shown on Norwegian and Swedish public television, where it especially in Norway caused a heated debate about fur farming. Before the premiere in Norway, the fur industry made attempts to stop the broadcasting. “Inside fur” is nominated for an Amanda at the Norwegian International Film Festival in the category “Best documentary”.
